A Lion in ????

Lesson: English

This week, we have been trying to figure out the title of the book on which we will base our writing for the next couple of weeks.

Our first activity was to match the  names of lions, both fictional and real, to their pictures and brief descriptions about them. Then we introduced the children to the front cover of the book with the title hidden. This was when the children made a prediction about what the book could be about.

Later, we showed them a range of flags and asked the children to match the flags to the names of the countries, before leading onto capital cities. This led onto the children guessing where the lion could be.

It was then revealed to the children to that the lion was in Paris and we spent time discussing France, in general, and Paris specifically before the children reassessed their prediction and decided on whether they needed to change them.

Working in this way hooked in the children and gave them some context to the story which will help them to understand it and also to produce non-fiction leaflets on Paris later on in the term.

The book we will be using is called A Lion in Paris by Beatrice Alemagna.
