Real Life Maths

Year 5 have been busy this week tackling real life maths challenges.  On Monday, they had to choose a recipe and 'buy'  all the ingredients online from Tesco which involved sourcing sufficient quantities of the ingredients at the best price to make the recipe and adding up how much it cost. They then had to compare the prices with Waitrose and see which was cheapest and by how much.  Finally, they had to work out the cost per portion. We think they have a better idea of the cost of living now!

Today, year 5 have been planning train journeys using Trainline.com. Each child was given £20 and had to make 5 complete journeys, noting how much each journey cost, the distance of each journey and how long each journey took.    Some managed to get to London on (extremely cheap), off-peak tickets and Finlay and Louis managed to go over 300 miles to a town just outside Edinburgh.  Alas, they couldn't afford to get all the way to Linlithgow, which was their aim. They couldn't afford it!

If any parent wish to make a donation of £20:00, Mr Muirhead and Mrs Megram will happily arrange for children to go as far away as possible, preferably during term-time!
