Year 4 Maths Group - Mrs Jones' Group

This week, children in Mrs Jones' group have begun to learn about decimals. The children were asked to revise their knowledge of tenths and count in tenths before linking these to decimal numbers. The children used a 100 bead string which are grouped into tens. Each str8ng represented one whole. Using this practical representation of a whole one helped kidder count in decimal fractions ( tenths / 0.1). 

Following on from this, the children began to explore how these tenths are represented in a place value grid. The work then began to extend into whole ones and tenths.

The children loved the practical nature of the beads to help to support their understand of what tenths are as fraction / decimal fractions of a whole.
