Making Toy Cars

Lesson: Design and technology

Over the last few days the year twos took part in a Design and Technology woodwork project making toy cars. On Monday I introduced the idea of designing cars to the children by borrowing some small cars from the Reception classes and inspecting them commenting on what the different parts of a car are called. The children then used the iPads to research different designs of cars and comment on what they liked and what they might like to burgle for their own designs. After that the children designed their own cars labelling their designs and choosing their favourite one.

On Tuesday we went into the Art Bay and practised sawing with off cuts of wood and junior hacksaws. Later the children cut the wood for our chassis properly before I glued them together using a glue gun. In the afternoon we attached the wheels before working on the body of our cars. The children struggled with replicating their designs, but still produced some thoughtful body art.
